Michael Gray gained his PhD in Chemistry at the Hatfield Polytechnic (Now the University of Hertfordshire) in 1983. Following a brief period of lecturing at Brunel University, he joined Taywood Engineering in 1984. With Taywood, he was involved in detailed investigations into durability of reinforced concrete. In 1988 he joined Stanger Consultants as Head of their Chemistry Department. As Head of the Chemistry Discipline he was responsible for the application of wide ranging analytical techniques to both construction materials and in the investigation of contaminated land. In 1991 he left Stangers and started his own Consultancy practice, working on chemical analysis and acting as an expert witness in several legal disputes. He worked on historic buildings specialising in cleaning and restoration and graffiti removal. In 1992, he joined London Underground as a Materials Scientist, working on flooring surveys and slip testing. He then was appointed as their Analytical Services Manager in 1994, having overall responsibility for chemical analysis for materials including occupational hygiene and environmental analysis. This included work with asbestos and use of the scanning electron microscope. He was instrumental in gaining NAMAS accreditation for the laboratory. He is a past chairman of the Construction Materials Group of the Society of Chemical Industry. In 1995, he joined MG Associates as a Partner and is now a Director following our incorporation in April 2000. David Butler - Worked originally with Ove Arup as a draughtsman before joining Technotrade Ltd, working with Michael Grantham. Transferred to site works early in his career and has some 20+ years in on site sampling and testing. Joined MG Associates as a subcontractor initially, but becoming site manager and in 2007, Director. Consultant - Michael Grantham commenced his career in 1968 as a polymer chemist working with the Dickinson Robinson Group. In 1976, he entered the field of construction testing with Harry Stanger Ltd. He gained experience in the application of chemical analysis and physical testing to construction problems, ranging from plaster failures, concrete failures, ceramic tiling problems, to flooring and floor screeding problems. In 1980, he joined STATS Ltd, as Chief Chemist. He worked on the first major motorway bridge investigation for Cumbria County Council and the DTp. He was appointed an Associate Director in 1983. In 1984, he founded, with four colleagues, Technotrade Ltd., a materials testing company based in Harpenden, Herts. As Technical Director and Quality Manager he was jointly responsible for the structural investigations section and also the laboratories. He was also appointed as an expert witness in a number of substantial litigation cases involving sums up to £12m. He sat on a number of technical committees, BSI committee CAB/4 which formulated the concrete codes, BCAs Palmer committee on the diagnosis of ASR in concrete. He is a past Chairman of the SCI Construction Materials Committee and a member of Council of the Institute of Concrete Technology. He is also Chairman of the Concrete Society's Materials Standing Committee, and also works as a part-time advisory engineer for the Concrete Society. In 1992 he set up MG Associates, offering services in concrete testing, advice on construction problems and on Quality Assurance. He lectures regularly on concrete inspection and testing. He is now a Consultant to the Company. All three have extensive experience in construction problems, durability problems, and testing of construction materials. Michael Grantham and Michael Gray have experience as expert witnesses in construction disputes. |
